Corona: Camels (Yes, Camels!) Carry School Books to Children to Keep Them Learning

Schools across Ethiopia closed in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic, affecting the education of over 26 million children. But one charity came up with a plan to keep children educated: send camels to remote villages to distribute storybooks!

“The scale of this crisis is huge, but we are determined to meet the needs of the most vulnerable and ensure no child is worse off at the end of this pandemic,” says Ekin Ogutogullari, country director for Save the Children, the charity behind the initiative, to the Thomson Reuters Foundation. “We are ensuring that children still continue to read and learn, despite the fact that they are out of school.”

Experts says that children out of school face a higher risk of facing forced labor and child marriage; a possibility Save the Children is trying to prevent. Since the start of the pandemic, the charity has helped over 22,000 children in 33 villages get access to education – and the number keeps growing.
