Fast-Track Training Equips Thousands of Teachers for Classrooms

Rwanda has trained and certified 24,000 teachers in under a year, rapidly strengthening the quality of education and ensuring that newly built classrooms are staffed nationwide.

“In order for Rwanda to make the kind of progress we envision, we must ensure that students in our country are learning well. For that to happen, we must ensure our teachers are well prepared,” said Flora Mutezigaju, Deputy Director General of the Rwanda Basic Education Board.

The programme was launched after more than 22,000 classrooms were built, creating urgent demand for qualified teachers. Around 25,000 graduates initially entered classrooms as uncertified teachers, then completed accelerated training delivered on weekends and holidays across all 30 districts. The initiative mobilised 36 facilitators and 600 trainers, combining coursework, micro-teaching practice and national assessments. Teachers who passed received full certification, while broader reforms, including salary increases of up to 88% and expanded public payroll coverage, are helping attract and retain talent. Together, these efforts are improving learning for hundreds of thousands of students and supporting Rwanda’s long-term goal of building a skilled, knowledge-based economy.
