In Corona Times, Refugees in Germany Find a Purpose – Even Without Work Permits

Due to an expected shortage of medical staff in Germany as a result of the coronavirus outbreak, the nation is looking to its migrant and refugee communities – including those normally not permitted to work – for help.

“Foreign doctors who are in Saxony but do not yet have a license to practice medicine can help with corona(virus) care,” reads a Facebook appeal by the Saxon State Medical Association.

Saxony’s regional medical board has revealed that hundreds of volunteers responded to offer their help, including “many foreign doctors whose licensing procedures are not yet completed, whose help is very welcome”.

Hamburg has also launched an appeal for volunteers with medical or nursing training, says the state’s Ministry of Health to InfoMigrants, accepting applications from qualified migrants and refugees regardless of their legal status.
