Environment The WorldGlobal Talks Make a Difference: New Measures to Protect Nature
Delegates with the United Nations Biodiversity Council recently met and passed a series of measures supporting nature.
“We have sent a light of hope. The common good – the environment, the protection of life, and the capacity to come together for something bigger than each national interest – is possible,” says Susana Muhamad, Colombia’s departing environment minister.
Leaders met in Rome, Italy, to ensure global agreement on various nature protection schemes. Progress was made on various environmental projects, including continuing an agreement that measures biodiversity commitments established at the initial meeting in Montreal in 2022. The deal is expected to conserve 30 per cent of the world’s land and water by 2022. Another idea in the works involves mobilising $200 billion per year in nature funding, particularly for the protection of developing countries that are rich in biodiversity but less economically advanced. Another promising win was the establishment of a continued international environmental dialogue between developed and developing nations, which may help ensure that ecological progress continues without being held up for too long in bureaucratic processes.
