Almost Ten Billion Dollars to Tackle Climate Change in over 100 Countries

The Green Climate Fund, which funds projects tackling climate change in developing countries, says they have reached a milestone upon approving $408 million in support of 13 new projects – having now provided support in more than 100 countries.

The international fund established by the United Nations received around $9.8 billion in new pledges this year, and has as a result been able to bolster new projects that fight climate threats, from protecting food crops in Mozambique to water banks in northern Gaza. They’ve additionally received another $500,000 from Indonesia, who doubled its first contribution, during a three-day board meeting in South Korea this month.

“With a strong replenishment, we are well equipped to enhance developing countries’ ability to meet their Paris Agreement goals,” says Executive Director Yannick Glemarec.

Among the projects green lit at the board meeting are efforts aimed at protecting forests in Laos, Kyrgyzstan, Chile and Paraguay. Also, Nepal’s Churia hills region will receive $39 million to help tackle forest degradation, flooding and soil erosion.
