Greyhound Racing Ban Marks Major Animal Welfare Victory

New Zealand has officially banned commercial greyhound racing, marking a significant step towards protecting dogs from racing-related injuries, deaths and other welfare risks.

“Greyhounds deserve better, and we owe them this,” says RSPCA Australia, the animal welfare organisation that advocates stronger protections and responsible rehoming for former racing dogs.

Effective from 1 August 2026, the ban followed years of animal welfare concerns and legislation passed in April. Around 1,400 retired greyhounds need new homes, and the transition is intended to give them safer lives as companion animals. However, approximately 150 dogs were exported to Australia in August, where racing remains legal, highlighting a gap in cross-border protections. Animal welfare advocates are calling for stronger safeguards, veterinary care and rehoming support to ensure the ban delivers lasting improvements for greyhounds.
