Brand New Mega Plant Built for Carbon-Neutral Product of the Future: Green Hydrogen

An EU-funded project called H2FUTURE is in full operation with one goal in mind: replacing fossil fuels with carbon-neutral hydrogen for a future consisting of cleaner and greener energy.

Climate plans across the world hope to almost entirely eliminate carbon emissions by 2050. H2FUTURE can help achieve this goal, as the new pilot plant – the world’s largest – in Linz, Austria tests whether the latest technology of producing green hydrogen is suitable for use on an industrial scale. The project is a major step forward towards a greener industry of steel, refineries, fertilizer manufacturing, and other sectors requiring large volumes of hydrogen.

The plant is located is at the site of the globally leading tech group voestalpine, a partner to the project and leader in steel production decarbonization. Eibensteiner, Chairman of the management board of Voestalpine AG, says, “We have set ourselves a clear goal of greater direct avoidance of CO2 emissions in steel manufacturing over the coming years. With the start of operations at the world’s largest hydrogen pilot plant at our site in Linz, we have succeeded in taking a significant step towards driving this technological transformation.”

“The use of green hydrogen is both a win-win situation for power generation and industry, and a perfect example of sector coupling through electrification,” adds Wolfgang Anzengruber, CEO of VERBUND, another partner to the H2FUTURE initiative.
