Here’s How Mangrove Trees will Protect Local Communities

As cyclones are getting more severe due to the climate crisis, the Bangladeshi government joined forces with NGOs and local communities to plant native mangrove trees along embankments and dikes to protect against tidal surges.

“As a climate change adaptation effort in Bangladesh, we have developed the program to increase the resilience of ecosystems by planting at least five species of mangroves on riverbanks exposed to the tide,” says Md Bodiuzzaman, general manager of climate action services at Friendship.

Due to its unique geography, consisting of a delta crisscrossed by some 300 rivers, the country is vulnerable to floods, tropical storms, and cyclones which erode the coast and salinize the soil. Authorities have developed strategic guidelines and plans, and the plantation of mangroves along the coast was identified as a viable solution against the impacts of climate change as the roots of this species of tree stabilize sediments. Organizations such as the Bangladesh Resource Council of Indigenous Knowledge, the Bangladesh office of the International Union for Conservation of Nature, and the NGO Friendship took part in strengthening embankments by planting half a million trees on 200 hectares with the help of local communities.
