Huge Drop in Tuberculosis Deaths and Cases Here

Following more than 20 years of concerted efforts, Cambodia has managed to significantly reduce the number of deaths due to Tuberculosis (TB) as well as the number of new cases.

“These achievements have allowed Cambodia to achieve the United Nations Millennium Development Goals related to the reduction of morbidity and mortality from TB four years ahead of the target,” states Prime Minister Hun Manet. “This is something that only a few countries in the world can achieve.”

The mortality rate from TB dropped by 45%  – from 42 cases per 100,000 people in 2000 to 23 per 100,000 people in 2022  – as did the number of new TB cases, going from 579 per 100,000 people in 2000 to 320 per 100,000 people by 2022. According to the World Health Organization, the Southeast Asian country has made solid progress in TB control, partly because TB treatment is free of charge with a high cure rate of more than 90%, saving an estimated 400,000 lives from TB since 2000.
