In 2025, Electric Cars Only in This City Centre

Stockholm will become the world’s first major city to ban petrol- and diesel-based cars from its city centre.

“Nowadays, the air in Stockholm causes babies to have lung conditions and the elderly to die prematurely. It is a completely unacceptable situation,” explains the vice mayor for transport Lars Stromgren.

To improve its pollution problems – levels exceeding the standard set by the World Health Organization – only electric vehicles will be allowed to drive within the city centre starting in 2025. The ban will not apply to emergency vehicles nor to drivers and passengers who have a documented disability. Other European cities, including Milan and Paris, may introduce similar restrictions.
