Largest-Ever Wildlife Passage Is Under Construction!

The construction of a wildlife crossing, the world’s largest, is set to start in Southern California, United States, to offer animals such as big cats, coyotes, and deers a safe passage to the nearby mountains.

“This wildlife crossing could not have come at a better time. It is truly a game changer,” says Jeff Sikich, biologist for the National Park Service. “Today’s groundbreaking sets a path toward saving our local mountain lions and supporting the diversity of wildlife in this whole region.”

The Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing – from the philanthropist whose foundation gave $25 million – will stretch 61 meters along 56 km over a freeway northwest of downtown Los Angeles. The construction should be completed by 2025. Such crossings – either bridges or tunnels – already exist in Europe, Canada, and elsewhere in the United States, but not of that scale.
