Less Coal-Fired Electricity: The Hundred-Billion-Dollar Plan

Vietnam has a national plan to cut in half its coal use by 2030.

The $134.7 billion dollar plan has been signed by Vietnam’s Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh. The money will be used to improve renewable energy sources within the country, ultimately lowering its reliance on coal to 19 percent by 2030. By 2050, the country hopes to have elimited completely its use of coal-fired electricity.

Vietnam’s plan to move away from coal and toward renewable energy sources has been entitled Power Development Plan 8. Though it has been delayed for years, the recent signing of the plan by Prime Minister Chinh is a major win for the environment.
