Let’s Wave Goodbye to Mink Farms

By June, all mink farms in Sweden are expected to be emptied of animals.

Though a formal ban is still needed, the Swedish government is providing SEK 180 million to mink farms in a decommissioning effort that is being praised by animal welfare groups.

Project 1882, an animal welfare and protection group focused on creating a world where animals are respected as sentient individuals with the right to their own lives, has spent over five decades campaigning to demobilise Sweden’s fur industry. Though fox fur and chinchilla fur farms have already been closed, Sweden is still one of the few remaining European countries with active mink fur farms. Though, for now, the effort to close mink farms relies on government funding, animal welfare groups are hopeful that a complete fur farming ban will soon come into effect. “This is a significant victory for animals. It would never have happened without Project 1882’s work, so I want to take this opportunity to thank all our donors who have stood on the side of fur animals along the way and made this historic change possible,” adds the CEO of Project 1882, Benny Andersson.
