Maternal Health Measures Reduce Deaths

Maternal deaths have declined significantly in Guyana over the past decade following new healthcare measures that are helping more women access safer pregnancies and childbirth.

“In the last three to four years, Guyana has not had any case of postpartum haemorrhage,” said Dr Frank Anthony, Minister of Health, highlighting the impact of specialised training for healthcare workers across the public health system.

The government has introduced a range of interventions, including nationwide training to prevent and manage childbirth complications and the construction of six maternity waiting homes near hospitals in remote regions. These facilities allow expectant mothers who live far from medical centres to stay close to care before delivery, reducing the risk of emergency births during travel. Region One recorded no maternal deaths last year, while ongoing case reviews and independent oversight committees continue to strengthen patient safety and improve standards of maternal care across the country.
