Environment United KingdomMore Offshore Clean Energy (and More Jobs!)
As part of its ambitious clean energy agenda, the United Kingdom has approved the construction of an offshore wind farm, thus creating thousands of jobs and powering about one million British homes by 2030.
“This project puts us within reach of our clean power offshore wind target,” says Ed Miliband, the energy secretary. “Through our plan for change, we’re getting on with delivering the clean energy and jobs Britain needs.”
The Rampion offshore wind farm, located off the coast of Sussex, will feature 90 turbines, adding an expected 1.2 gigawatts of clean power for households and businesses. Rampion 2’s construction phase, expected to begin next year, is expected to create around 4,000 jobs. The United Kingdom’s clean power agenda includes doubling the UK’s onshore wind, tripling its solar power, and quadrupling its offshore wind power capacity by 2030. “The UK has a boundless supply of wind that cannot be turned on and off at the whims of dictators and petrostates. It’s time to get off the fossil fuel rollercoaster, roll out clean power, protect our energy security, and bring down bills for good.”
