Establishing five major national parks across China has increased ecosystem biodiversity and protected key species.
“We hope to convey the conservation values and concepts of national parks to every member of society and form a consensus,” says An Lidan, deputy director of the National Park Center.
Recent statistics reveal that thanks to the creation of the parks and other conservation measures, over 70 per cent of China’s wild giant panda habitats have been effectively protected. Various ecological “corridors”—routes connecting fragmented animal populations—have also been established. All in all, over 8,000 rare animal and plant species have been protected under the creation of these national parks and corridors. This trend will most likely continue in the years to come.
