Safe Space for Children Separated from Ebola-Struck Parents

UNICEF-supported nurseries in the Democratic Republic of Congo have been caring for children while their parents recover in Ebola treatment centers, or until they find an alternative caretaker if a parent has died from the virus.

Children are provided 24-hour care, are monitored in case they develop symptoms from the extremely contagious virus and receive specialized psychological and nutritional support.

“I’m proud of the work I do,” says Solange Kamuha, a psychologist at the nursery who helps reunite families with children who have survived Ebola. “I feel emotional when children leave.”

Since November 2018, nine nurseries across the country have been set up next to Ebola treatment centers so that children can also have the chance to be close to their parents as they recover.
