Society SudanOpening Borders to Feed Hungry Families
After a six-month closure, Sudan’s Adre border has reopened, ensuring essential food and supplies reach desperate families.
“The re-opening of the Arde crossing is critical for the effort to prevent famine from spreading across Sudan, and it must now stay in use. I want to acknowledge all parties for taking this vital step to help WFP get lifesaving aid to millions of people in desperate need,” says WFP Executive Director Cindy McCain.
The United Nations World Food Program dispatched trucks carrying rice, pulses, oil, and other goods destined to reach roughly 13,000 people at risk of famine following the opening of the Adre border. The border, crossing from Chad into Sudan’s Darfur region, is the most effective and shorted route currently available to offer humanitarian assistance at the necessary speed required to respond to the alarming hunger crisis within the country. The World Food Program – the world’s largest humanitarian organization offering food assistance – expects to be able to support 8.4 million people in the region by the end of 2024.
