Portugal’s Future Looks Greener as It No Longer Drills for Oil and Gas

In their latest effort to boost renewable energy sources, the Portuguese authorities have canceled the country’s last two remaining fossil fuel extraction contracts!

According to Portuguese activist group Climáximo, the cancellation of the final two projects – on top of the 13 other oil and gas exploration and extraction contracts since 2015 – is largely thanks to the protests and actions driven by environmentalists in the nation who have long fought against the use of fossil fuels.

Portugal aims to become 100% renewable energy-powered in the next two decades, and has, according to the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis, accomplished a major increase in the production of electricity from renewable sources last year – going up from 51% at the beginning of 2019, to 76% by December.
