Public Buildings to Go on Compulsory “Energy Saving Mode”

Germany passed a bill to make saving energy compulsory in all economic sectors to fight climate change and curb the use of fossil fuels on its territory.

Under the Energy Efficiency Act, regulations for energy savings in public buildings, industry and fast-growing data centers will be enforced, with the hopes of achieving a 26.5% cut by 2030 from 2008.

Companies must draw up plans for energy savings, although there won’t be binding measures. Germany’s 2030 climate goal is cutting CO2 emissions by 65% compared to 1990. In March, the European Union struck a deal to cut final energy consumption by 11.7% by 2030, and the new law is part of Germany’s effort to reach that goal.
