Rare Rhino Born — One of Less Than 80 in the World!

A rare female baby Sumatran rhino, the smallest of all rhino species and classified as critically endangered, has just been born in an Indonesian sanctuary.

With the World Wide Fund for Nature estimating that fewer than 80 Sumatran rhinos remain in the world, largely on the Indonesian islands of Sumatra and Borneo, the birth of even one is a huge success for the species and conservationists alike.

“The birth of this Sumatran rhino is such happy news amid the government’s and partners’ efforts to increase the population,” says Wiratno, a senior official at Indonesia’s environment ministry.

The baby Sumatran rhino’s mother, Rosa, has suffered eight miscarriages since 2005 and the baby rhino’s father, Andatu, was the very first Sumatran rhino born in a sanctuary in more than 120 years. Successful births are rare, and additional problems such as poaching and climate change threaten this species to the brink of extinction. Thankfully, conservation efforts for the species are slowly but surely revealing promising results.
