Rent-a-Christmas Tree (and Let It Live for Next Time)

A new green concept has taken one of Christmas’ most popular tradition by storm: renting a potted Christmas tree instead of a cut-down one for the holiday season. And for the rest of the year, it goes back to the tree farm and continues to grow.

“With 7 million trees going into landfill on the United Kingdom each year for the sake of 3 weeks of pleasure, there must be a better way to do Christmas trees,” reads London Christmas Tree Rental‘s website.

The London-based company offers the possibility of renting, year after year, the same tree – which comes with specific instructions for indoor temperature, watering techniques, and care – until it becomes too big for indoor celebration. Then, it retires and is planted in a forest. Last year, they rented out 100 trees; this year, they are already sold out.

A tree-rental company based in California, U.S.A., Rent a Christmas Tree, offers a similar service since 2009. This goes to show that sustainable practices are also relevant during the holiday season.
