Animals South AfricaRhino Poaching Declines as Protection Efforts Strengthen
South Africa has recorded a 16% drop in rhino poaching in 2025, reflecting progress in conservation efforts despite continued regional challenges and pressure from wildlife trafficking networks.
Environment Minister Willie Aucamp said 352 rhinos were poached nationwide, down from 420 the previous year, with major improvements seen in KwaZulu-Natal’s Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park, while incidents nearly doubled in parts of Mpumalanga, including areas linked to Kruger National Park.
Officials credit the decline to integrated strategies combining dehorning programs, advanced surveillance technology and stronger legal action against organized crime, alongside international cooperation that has strengthened enforcement and led to tougher prosecutions targeting trafficking networks.
