Nine Asian countries have seen a sharp decline in child mortality since 2000, due to measures approved and enforced to save the youngest share of their respective population.
According to the UN Inter-agency Group for Child Mortality Estimation, these nine countries have reduced their child mortality rates by more than half since 2000.
Between 2000 and 2022, Afghanistan has seen its child mortality rate go from 13% to 6%. In Bangladesh, it’s from 9% to 3%. Cambodia’s child mortality rate went from 11% to 2%. China and Laos have seen their rate go from 11% to 4%. In India, child mortality fell from 9% to 3%. In Indonesia, that rate went from 5% to 2%. Myanmar has seen its child mortality rate go from 9% to 4% and in Nepal, from 8% to 3%. Consequently, millions of children are surviving through the crucial years of life thanks to improved nutrition, clean water, sanitation, vaccinations, and poverty reduction.
