Superpower Countries Unanimously Declare “No Nuclear War”

In a rare joint statement, all five nuclear powers — Russia, China, the UK, the United States, and France — confirmed that a nuclear war could never be won and thus should never be fought and that the spread of nuclear weapons must be prevented.

“We declare there could be no winners in a nuclear war, it should never be started,” the released Russian statement reads. The United States version of the statement adds, “We underline our desire to work with all states to create a security environment more conducive to progress on disarmament with the ultimate goal of a world without nuclear weapons with undiminished security for all.”

The released joint statement reinforces the need for compliance with disarmament agreements, originally set forth in the Non-Proliferation Treaty of 1970. The rare statement by the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council is a loud reminder to all that nuclear warfare would end in a lose-lose situation and that the pursuit for disarmament must go forward.
