Sweden’s E-Road to Fossil Free Transportation Now Two Kilometers Long

The Swedish Transport Administration constructed a two-kilometer electrified road in the Stockholm area – the first of its kind that can charge all types of electric and hybrid vehicles – as part of a project aimed at electrifying all highways in the nation.

The eRoadArlanda project is particularly appealing because unlike overhead power lines, the electrified rail system is neater and doesn’t need to be custom-built for specific vehicles. So long as the e-vehicle has a charging device attached on their underside, the road will use conductive technology to charge and can even find out when the vehicle is maxed out on power.

Sweden aims to have a fossil fuel free transportation system in the next decade and the eRoadArlanda team explains that these types of electric roads would cut fossil emissions by 80 to 90 percent.

“One of the most important issues of our time is the question of how to make fossil-free road transportation a reality,” says Hans Säll, Chairman of the eRoadArlanda consortium. “We now have a solution that will make this possible, which is amazing. Sweden is at the cutting edge of this technology, which we now hope to introduce in other areas of the country and the world.”
