Animals AustraliaThe Southern Bluefin Tuna Is No Longer Endangered
Thanks to effective management actions, the southern bluefin tuna is no longer listed as an endangered species in Australia.
For more than ten years, Australia’s Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment, and Water has worked tirelessly with international partners to curb threats to the fish species.
Under national environment law, the southern bluefin tuna was listed as threatened in 2010, partly due to global and recreational fishing driving down population numbers. The government is investing in positive work to protect Australia’s biodiversity, ensuring native species continue to thrive. It intends to further collaborate with international partners to protect other threatened species.
