They Have Big Plans to Share Renewable Energy with the World

Australia is investing close to $1 trillion in large-scale renewable projects that encompass wind, solar, hydrogen, and storage, generating more clean electricity than the country needs in a goal to become a green energy exporter.

There are currently 655 utility-scale solar PV projects, 290 onshore wind projects, and 235 big battery projects underway, alongside several rooftops and small distributed assets.

“There are a total of nearly 1,300 projects put forward by around 600 different companies that amount to some 400 gigawatts of new capacity, worth around $830 billion at current costs,” says David Dixon, an analyst with Rystad Energy.

Megaprojects include the 26GW Sun Cable project in the Northern Territory — with 32GWh of battery storage — and CWP Global‘s 52GW and 26GW wind and solar projects in Western Australia. “Giga-scale” projects generating 1,000MW are expected in 2022, such as the Macintyre wind project in Queensland and the Goyder South project in South Australia. The country will look to export hydrogen and ammonia, and supply domestic green industries with the likes of green steel and low carbon products.
