They’re Leading the Way to Clean Energy

Chile is taking the lead in phasing out coal and welcoming renewables compared to all other developing nations.

Thanks to Chili’s robust environmental regulations, – including the introduction of carbon taxes and emissions standards – the nation is becoming a world leader in its integration of renewable energy, particulary solar.

As of October 2024, Chile’s total electricity output generated by coal fell to a monthly low of 11.7 per cent. As recent as 2016, the number hovered around 43.6 per cent. As of now, renewables account for 66.8 per cent of Chile’s electricity, with 20.9 per cent coming from solar and 12.8 per cent from wind. The country is on track to reach over 90 per cent of electricity generation from renewables by 2030, placing it among the frontrunners in the energy transition. Moreover, new solar and wind facilities are already being constructed in the country.
