This Region Has Made Major Progress to Educate Their Kids

Primary school enrollment in Western and Central Africa has risen from 50 percent in the 1990s to nearly 90 percent today.

“Putting our young people first is at the heart of our work. Even before the pandemic, the world was already experiencing a learning crisis. The future of any society lies in its ability to provide its children and youth with the tools and opportunities to flourish and to contribute to the development of the country,” tweetes Ousmane Diagana.

In June 2022, leaders from Western and Central Africa met to endorse the Accra Urgent Call for Action on Education. The act is set to ensure that 1 million more youth acquire digital literacy skills and that 3.7 million more youth receive training in foundational skills by 2025. Other targets of the act include teaching 30 million children to read by 2030 as well as ensuring that 12.5 million more adolescent girls are in school by 2030. So far, the progress is promising.
