Kenya Wants 100% Green Energy – so It Built Africa’s Largest Wind Farm

Kenya, one of the most environmentally ambitious countries in Africa, has launched the continent’s largest wind power plant – complementing the nation’s plan to achieve 100% green energy by 2020 and sustainably reduce electricity costs.

Lake Turkana, in northern Kenya, is now home to a 775-million-dollar wind farm consisting of 365 turbines, according to President Uhuru Kenyatta, and was designed increase electricity supply by 13 percent. This means more Kenyans would have access electricity, at a lower cost.

“Today marks an important milestone in the country’s steady march towards achieving self-sufficiency in power production,” says Mugo Kibati, chairman of the Lake Turkana Wind Power, a private association that runs the plant.

“Today, we again raised the bar for the continent as we unveil Africa’s single largest wind farm,” says Kenyatta. “Kenya is without doubt on course to be a global leader in renewable energy.” He adds that power from the wind farm would also help ensure housing, health care, jobs and food security in the nation.
