From Shampoo to Deodorant: Cosmetics Tested on Animals Are Now Banned in California

As of this year, a bill against animal cruelty in California, United States has finally become law: the sale of cosmetics and personal hygiene products tested on animals after January 1st, 2020, is now officially prohibited.

According to the Humane Society of the United States, cosmetics tested on the millions of animals each year involve many cruel methods, including pouring chemicals’ into animals eyes, and “lethal dose” tests – or feeding animals the same chemical over and over until it kills them.

In an effort to end animal cruelty, the bill, called the California Cruelty-Free Cosmetics Act, was signed into law back in September 2018, after a unanimous vote to pass it. As of this decade, California retailers are no longer allowed to sell any cosmetic product – from shampoo to deodorant to makeup – that has been or is being tested on animals anytime after January 1, 2020. The same rule applies to cosmetics containing ingredients being tested on animals.

Companies in violation will be fined $5,000, with an additional $1,000 for each day they continue to violate the law.
