The number of people without access to electricity worldwide declined in 2023, and according to the data for the first months of 2024, the trend will continue at a similar rate.
The number of people without access to electricity declined by more than 10 million, from over 760 million in 2022 to below 750 million in 2023.
Between 2015 and 2019, the proportion of the population deprived of access to electricity decreased by 80 million yearly on average. Most developing Asia and Latin America are getting closer to universal electricity access. In Sub-Saharan Africa – where 80% of people without electricity live – much remains to be done, and decentralized access solutions serve only 7% of the region’s population. To reach Target 7.1 – to ensure universal access to affordable, reliable, and modern energy services by 2030 – of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal (SDG), the yearly decrease must occur ten times faster than today. Financial commitments are necessary to accelerate progress on global energy access, with new measures and innovations improving the long-term outlook.
