Win-Win: Ecotourism Proves Succesful for Communities and the Environment Alike

Ecotourism is driving job creation, reviving local economies, and contributing to protecting endangered species and the environment across Bhutan.

“Its primary goal is to stimulate the rural economy by encouraging wildlife-based tourism, generating employment opportunities, and building stronger communities ties to nature,” says Tashi Tenzin, project manager with the Department of Tourism Secretariat.

The country aims to become a leading ecotourism destination – defined by responsible travel that conserves the environment and respects local cultures and traditions. Some activities throughout Bhutan include trekking, homestays, birdwatching sites, and community festivals. Many ecotourism activities are driven by the country’s youth and women, offering a viable future for groups that previously had fewer opportunities. The trend is spreading across various districts in Bhutan following the successful 2020 flagship ecotourism project in the Chhukha region.
