World’s Largest Shipping Company Will Be First to Go Carbon-Neutral

A Danish container shipping company, the biggest in the world, creates a precedent in the industry by announcing that as of 2023, all its vessels will be carbon neutral.

Maersk plans on making its dual-fueled ship run on either e-methanol or sustainable bio-methanol, and all its future buildings will run on carbon-neutral fuel sources. The company achieves its goal seven years in advance, as its original target was set for 2030.

This unprecedented decision puts pressure on its peers and the industry altogether. In 2018, the International Maritime Organization set its target for international shipping at a minimum of 50% cut in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
