13 Newly Protected Nature Reserves in One Country

Mexico recently announced the creation of 13 new protected areas.

“It gives us much pleasure that in this administration, we can leave behind such a grand legacy for the Mexican people,” says Secretary of the Environment and Natural Resources María Luisa Albores González.

The newly protected areas cover a total of 17,918 hectares (44,276 acres) to be overseen by the National Commission of Protected Natural Areas. Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador is on a mission to conserve and protect as many environmental sites as possible. Since 2018, his administration has protected over four million hectares (9.8 million acres) of land and water. The additional 13 protected areas bring the country’s list of total federally protected areas to 200.
