A Simple Daily Habit Is Transforming Children’s Futures

Across the European Union, school meal programmes now provide nutritious food to around 25 million children, improving health, education outcomes and social equality.

“School meal programmes are a valuable social investment,” said Patricia Eustachio Colombo, public health researcher, highlighting their wide-ranging benefits for children and society.

EU countries have invested over €12 billion in these programmes, with many expanding free or subsidised meals, particularly for disadvantaged children. Research suggests returns of €7 to €34 for every €1 spent, driven by better health, improved learning, and long-term economic gains. The European Child Guarantee also commits member states to ensuring that vulnerable children receive at least one healthy meal each school day, with growing momentum toward broader and more inclusive coverage.
