Wild Horse Foal Marks Conservation Breakthrough

A Przewalski’s horse has been born on the steppe for the first time in 200 years, marking a milestone in restoring Kazakhstan’s native wildlife.

“We very much hope that this first generation of foals will mark the beginning of a self-sustaining population,” said Vera Voronova, CEO of the Association for the Conservation of Biodiversity of Kazakhstan.

The male foal was born on 22 August to horses brought to the country in 2024 through the Return of the Wild Horses programme, with his parents mating under wild conditions after reintroduction. The programme aims to bring at least 40 Przewalski’s horses to the steppe by 2029, establishing a viable population of the world’s last truly wild horse subspecies. The effort forms part of the Altyn Dala Conservation Initiative, whose partners are restoring wildlife and ecosystems across 750,000 square kilometres of steppe, desert and wetlands, building on the successful recovery of the once critically endangered saiga antelope.
