Society United KingdomA Steady Drop in Crime in This Region
The latest national survey shows that over the last ten years, crime against individuals and households, including domestic abuse, has decreased in England and Wales, the United Kingdom.
Data for year ending (YE) September 2024 shows that offences involving firearms decreased by 17% compared with YE September 2023, going from 6,499 to 5,372 offences, and the number of homicides decreased by 4% compared with YE September 2023, from 572 to 550 offences.
The Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW) is an interviewer-administered face-to-face survey asking people 16 years and over who reside in households about their experiences of crime in the past year. The questions are about theft, robbery, criminal damage, fraud, computer misuse, and violence with or without injury. CSEW is a reliable measure of crime trends since it is unaffected by police reporting or recording changes. Experiences of sensitive crime such as domestic abuse, sexual assault, stalking, and harassment are presented separately. The survey doesn’t include crimes against commercial or public sector bodies, tourists, or those living in communal establishments (care homes, student halls or residences, prisons), nor does it cover “victimless” crimes like drug possession and other crimes against the state.
