Another Nation Joins the Club of Curbing Carbon Emissions

Under its first national climate protection law, Greece is implementing a series of measures to align itself with Europe’s climate goal and boost the production of renewable energy in order to become net-zero by 2050.

Keen to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels, Greece wants renewable energy to account for 70% of the national power grid by 2030, and to achieve this feat, the licensing process for green electricity projects will be made easier.

The country plans on cutting CO2 emissions by at least 55% by 2030 from 1990 levels, and by 80% by 2040. As part of Greece’s goal to decarbonize its economy, coal-fired generation capacity will be completely shut down by 2028, emission-free transportation will be encouraged, and by 2030, the use of crude oil on islands not linked to the mainland’s power grid will be prohibited.
