As Betting Will Be Illegal, Greyhound Racing Is Running Out of Steam

Greyhound racing is in decline in the United States. Florida has voted to ban betting on greyhounds as of December 31, 2020, and Iowa and Arkansas’s tracks are expected to close by the end of 2022.

The popularity of greyhound racing declined when reports of animal cruelty surfaced. Consequently, when Florida Senator Tom Lee proposed the amendment to the state constitution, 70% of the population voted in favor of rendering betting illegal. Therefore, race tracks won’t make profits and will be forced to shut down.

The non-profit organization Grey2K works in the United States to convince other states to join Florida in outlawing the industry, but also around the world to go after countries where it is still legal like Australia, Ireland, Mexico, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and Vietnam.
