Offshore Wind Development In the Works for Greener Electricity

The government of the United States intends to develop large-scale offshore wind farms along the country’s coastline as part of its strategy to produce and promote green electricity.

“The Interior Department is laying out an ambitious road map as we advance the administration’s plans to confront climate change, create good-paying jobs, and accelerate the nation’s transition to a cleaner energy future,” says Interior Secretary Deb Haaland.

There could be wind turbines in the Gulf of Mexico, the Gulf of Maine, along the coast of the Mid-Atlantic States, North and South Carolina, California, and Oregon. The federal waters could be leased to wind power developers by 2025. There is already an offshore wind farm off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts, and a dozen projects are being reviewed along the East Coast. Along the West Coast, Central and Northern California and Oregon will soon welcome commercial wind power development. The Biden administration plans on cutting the country’s fossil fuel emissions in half from 2005 levels by 2030, notably by promoting the use of electric vehicles and of clean energy. Some 30,000 megawatts of wind could be produced offshore by 2030.
