Bye-Bye Dirty Boilers, Hello Green Ones!

As of 2026, fossil fuel boilers will be banned in the Netherlands, and the government plans on financially helping homeowners switch to a greener, cheaper, and more sustainable way to heat their residences.

“The urgency of sustainability is great and the pace must be increased,” says Minister for Housing and Spatial Planning Hugo De Jonge. “It is also better for everyone’s wallet if we use less natural gas. That is why the cabinet wants the hybrid heat pump to become the standard from 2026 when the central heating boiler needs to be replaced.”

Heating systems will need to be either connected to a district heat network or substituted for an electric heat pump or a hybrid heat pump. The latter is a combination of a heat pump and a central heating boiler. The Dutch government will grant $161 million every year until 2030 to homeowners so they can replace their old boilers with sustainable ones.
