Country Reaches Green Goal Nine Years Ahead of Schedule

India ramped up its environmental efforts and achieved its target of having 40% of installed electricity capacity from renewable energy sources ahead of time by close to a decade.

“At COP 21, as part of its Nationally Determined Contributions, India had committed to achieving 40% of its installed electricity capacity from non-fossil energy sources by 2030,” says the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. “The country has achieved this target in November 2021 itself.”

The country with the world’s largest population generates 150.05 Gw of green energy, 6.78 Gw in nuclear energy, for a total of 156.83 Gw. This accounts for 40.1% of the 390.8 Gw of installed electricity capacity to be non-fossil based. At the CoP26 held in Glasgow earlier this year, India’s government assured that the country plans on bringing that total to 500 Gw by 2030.
