Energy Grid Expands, Providing Millions with Electricity

A significant expansion of Nigeria’s energy grid has given 5.5 million people access to electricity.

The Nigeria Electrification Project was in the works from 2018 to 2024 in an effort to give electricity access to some of the nearly 80 million people who lack it in Nigeria.

Over the past few years, 125 mini-grids and more than a million solar home systems have been installed, mostly in extremely rural parts of Nigeria. Overall, the undertaking created over 5,000 private sector local green jobs and now provides electricity to 5.5 million Nigerians. Various organisations and nations aided the project, either monetarily or otherwise, including Austria, Canada, France, the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet, and the Rockefeller Foundation, among others. Following the success of the project, a follow-up plan aims to provide renewable energy to over 17.5 million Nigerians by 2030.
