Global Mpox Vaccine Stockpile Strengthens Outbreak Response

A new global mpox vaccine stockpile will give countries faster and more equitable access to vaccines during outbreaks, strengthening preparedness worldwide.

“By establishing a dedicated global stockpile, using an approach that has proven successful for managing other emergency vaccines, we are ensuring that countries can access them more quickly when they need them, saving lives and containing outbreaks before they spread further,” said Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization.

The stockpile becomes the fifth global emergency vaccine reserve alongside those for yellow fever, meningitis, Ebola and cholera, with requests assessed within 48 hours. Countries eligible for financial support will receive vaccines free of charge, while others can access doses immediately and reimburse their cost later. Between January 2022 and July 2026, 145 countries and territories reported 188,847 confirmed mpox cases, underscoring the value of securing vaccines in advance and keeping them ready for rapid deployment.
