EnvironmentSociety BangladeshHere’s Largest Off-Grid Solar Power Program in the World
Bangladesh has implemented the world’s most extensive off-grid solar power program, helping its 20 million citizens improve their quality of life, boost their livelihood, and strengthen their resilience toward climate change.
“We have more faith in solar power, because, when a storm comes, the electricity connection may be disconnected or the power may be turned off, but solar power helps us to find a safe shelter by showing us the way,” says Monir Hossain, resident of the Gazi Mahmud village.
The Solar Home Systems (SHS) program, launched as a pilot project in 2003, involved 50,000 households and 200,000 rural businesses and religious facilities. The state provided generous incentives like tax breaks for rooftop solar installers. Through a partnership with 56 organizations, the government installed 4.1 million solar systems by 2018, reaching 14% of the population. According to the World Bank, the initiative improved health and living conditions, reduced indoor air pollution and even boosted school attendance. With Bangladesh ranked 7th globally in climate vulnerability, access to renewable energy is crucial. The government plans to increase its renewable energy capacity to 4.1 gigawatts by 2030, up from 1.2 gigawatts today, ensuring a more resilient and sustainable future.
