Historic UN Resolution on Animal Welfare Has Been Adopted

Thanks to its leadership, Canada played an important role in the adoption of the first United Nations Environment Assembly resolution focusing on animal welfare, a useful tool to protect biodiversity and address the climate crisis.

“Animal welfare is fundamentally interconnected to climate change, biodiversity, and our collective global health,” says Melissa Matlow, Campaign Director with World Animal Protection Canada. “We are grateful to the countries that showed leadership, by bringing this resolution to the floor and for Canada’s support and engagement to get this resolution passed and putting animal welfare on the global policy agenda.”

The Sustainable Development Nexus resolution has been adopted by all seven Member States and aims at completing an expert report on what links animal welfare, sustainable development, and the environment. Animal welfare is front and center since it can contribute to addressing the biggest challenges our world is facing. Consequently, UN institutions will better address the climate crisis and biodiversity crisis.
