Environment ArgentinaHistoric Wetland Gets National Protection
This past summer, the Argentinean government officially declared the important region of Laguna Mar Chiquita as Ansenuza National Park and Reserve.
The region provides for an abundant number of shorebirds. Now, with official national park protection, Ansenuza aims to conserve and protect a multitude of species. The Maned Wolf, three different species of flamingos, and 30 species of shorebirds, among others will now all have a safer ecosystem in which to thrive.
Ansenuza National Park consists of a large diversity of habitats, from freshwater rivers to muddy beaches, to dry forests, grasslands, and savannahs. The Mar Chiquita lagoon is the largest saline wetland in South America and among the largest five on the planet. The region is believed to support almost 36 percent of all bird species in Argentina.
