Leading the Way for Wildlife to Safely Cross Roads

Wildlife crossings are saving animals’ lives and reducing automobile collisions.

Since 2015, Colorado has been leading the way in the creation of wildlife crossings within the United States. So far, 28 new crossings have been built, and deer, elk, bears, mountain lions, bobcats, coyotes, and foxes have benefited.

Studies have found that wildlife crossings can reduce highway vehicle collisions with large animals by more than 80 per cent. Though they are expensive to implement, they have been found to save money in the long run due to fewer automobile accidents. Grants from the state, nonprofit groups, private donors, and indigenous tribal communities have all helped make the crossings possible, emphasizing how a more harmonious approach to human and wildlife interactions benefits all. “This is one way to give back: to help preserve life,” says Andrew Gallegos, a member of the Tribal Council.
